Local move from Braintree, MA to Westminster, MA

Save yourself both the grief and costs of an unreliable service

My god-daughter and I bought a new home in Westminster to be closer to her job in Central Mass. I sold my home in Braintree to live with her in my retirement and began the process of finding a mover. I contacted several move companies and prices ranged widely. We ended up choosing Casey as several friends had heard good things about their service. We accepted a quote to move my packed furniture, boxes, and bins from a small cape style home in Braintree, store it for two days in their truck, and move it into new residence along with a POD on property. Our move out went extremely smooth with the four promised movers and an extra man designated as the driver. The entire truck was filled in less than 4 hours quoted and we were left with a great experience. Dan their coordinator and mover was unflappable and instilled great confidence. His team worked well together. However, on move in day, we entered the Twilight Zone. They arrived earlier than expected and were frustrated they could not reach me; despite me telling them the home phone would be disconnected, they called that number vs the cell phone I provided and never attempted to call it. The movers were a different crew except for Dan the coordinator and he was aware of the POD; in addition to our reminders about the POD, Dan also notified the company that there would be a POD to unload. We were not provided four workers as promised in the contract: two could move without requiring significant redirection to grab items (one of the guys needed to be told repeatedly to grab things rather than standing around) and a disabled man who was supposed to only be the driver. After four hours, the truck still contained items and the POD had not even been touched. I was told that we were now on overtime and they would charge us for the remaining effort or work would stop. We contacted the company at least three times--even asking for a manager to return our call--but our words fell on deaf ears and we were told that the manager left at 1:30 that day. Chris listened to us and stated he would pass on the concern to Danielle but the familiar "it is what it is" prevailed. It cost us an additional $1875 for the remaining items to be unloaded in addition to the quoted $6700 amount. I might add that it was suggested our gratuity was to be 20% of the quote to be split amongst the workers for both days. While I do not mind rewarding people for providing service, it did add to an already expensive proposition when accounting for the understaffing contributing to the hourly wage kicking in after four hours. We gave it willingly for the move out, but it seemed questionable for the move in. The bottom line is the company fully staffs your move out and understaffs your move in forcing you to pay more than the quote, effectively holding your possessions hostage unless you pay up.

Just an update....we have never been contacted by Casey's Movers over our concern and terrible experience. No apologies or acknowledgement of their failure to adhere to their contract and deception. As we have unpacked, we have also discovered "the care" used in moving our belongings. Fragile must have been interpreted as a mere suggestion. We can dispose of things that did not survive and repair/refinish items not handled with care. However, we are hopeful that others pondering their move will choose more wisely than we did and save themselves the grief and wasted expenses of this poor choice on our part.

Excess materials used

Although they vehemently denied my claim of overuse of materials, even after I sent actual pictures of empty boxes with used rolls of tape (that I paid 6 months storage on), excess packing paper on non breakable items, I’m still convinced I was taken for a ride! A $20,000 total move fee and they sent me $90 as a token. If you use this company remember the phrase buyer beware”’

Casey Movers - Terrific Service.

Casey Movers was terrific! They were timely, hard working, courteous, and careful with all my belongings. I used their convenient storage facilities while waiting to move into my new home. The second move out of storage also went very well and was even more impressive as they dealt with a huge snow storm! The company even accommodated a last minute change in my schedule, as my house closing date was moved back one week. I highly recommend using Casey Movers.

Interstate Move.

If there were anything lower than 1 star Casey would earn it. we did an interstate move. Truck was late, almost all the items they packed broke. I have been calling claims for 2 weeks and have not gotten a call back. The unloading was totally unprofessional. They only hired 2 guys to unload a 4500 sq ft house. The cost of this move was $11,000. This was supposed to cover putting back the beds, shelves, etc which was not done. The local movers insisted Casey never contracted nor paid them to do this. Supposedly they are insured but no company rep will call me back to start the claims process. I have emailed them photos and left multiple messages. Just a horrible experience!

Hi Isabella. I have already fulfilled your claim and sent out the compensation check for damages.

Our estimator determines how many movers are needed on a moving operation that day of your estimate and you two are free to discuss your options. We confirm everything via email as soon as we get your deposit.

We were not contracted to dis-assemble furniture and re-assemble. Most movers (including our agents) will not do this. We did this as a courtesy to you when we loaded you up. You were not charged for this service.

Commercial drivers are limited to 10 hours a day unlike you. They can hit traffic, weather and a number of other problems on the way from Massachusetts to Louisiana. I understand we were scheduled for 9:00am. I'm sorry our driver arrived around 1:00pm.

This company is a scam.

This was the worst experience I have ever had with a service provider. I used Casey’s for a move out of my house to a large storage unit that they also owned. The original quote was reasonable and the sales man was nice. During the move, the man in charge was very rude and demanded payment half way through the truck being filled. I thought this was unfair as the move wasn’t finished and there was no way to know what the final hours worked would be, but had no choice but to pay him. The movers were also careless with things and I was worried about the outcome. My things were in storage with them for a very long time while I was working out of state. Billing was random, sometimes I wasn’t charged for months, and sometimes I was overcharged for future months to come. When it came time to get my things out of storage and in to my new house, I called several moving companies for quotes. I did not want to use Casey again because of the unprofessionalism they displayed during the first move. When I called Casey’s to let them know I would be hiring someone to take my things out of storage for my move, they informed me that they would not allow another moving company to remove my things and they would charge me a minimum of $300 to load someone’s truck. None of the other moving companies I spoke with had ever heard of such a practice and they all refused to work with Casey’s on this as it was a potential liability on their end. This left me with no choice but to use Casey’s again. I remembered that during the original move, they told me that if I used them again to move my things out of storage, I would get a significant discount, so I thought that at least this was a benefit despite my being terrified to use them again, much less to see the condition of my things after witnessing how reckless the movers had been during my first move. When I asked Casey’s for a quote, they gave me a reasonable price, but then the manager, Matt, wrote me to say that they would actually be charging me the same thing that I paid the first time. When I asked about the discount I was promised, he said that I was already getting a discount and that I hadn’t paid much for storage. Despicable. He did make it sound like it may not be as much depending on how fast the movers could get my things in to my new house. He would not tell me what time they would be starting, however. I had a very bad feeling about this. Well, moving day came and when the movers introduced themselves to me, one of them seemed half drunk. As I watched my things being removed from the truck, I did notice a few damaged items, which the mover’s responded to by saying that the things were probable already like that. Once again, about half-way through the truck being emptied, the man in charge demanded payment. I told him that I would pay when the truck was empty and I knew the final tally of hours worked. He then called his boss, the same rude manager, Matt, that I had dealt with to date, and he put me on the phone. Matt informed me that they would not finish unloading the truck until I gave them the full payment of what he quoted from the first move, and that they wanted a certified check. It was never mentioned to me that I needed a certified check and I didn’t pay with one the first time which I mentioned to him, and he told me to read the fine print of the “contract,” by which he meant the quote he had e-mailed me. Matt was very rude and angry. When I reiterated that I would not pay until the truck was empty, he called the guys moving my things and told them to pack up and leave. I called Matt back and told him that I would call the police if they left with my things, he told me that he would call them first. The guys moving me then said they weren’t leaving, but got in the truck and peeled out of my driveway, speeding down the street with my things. I couldn’t believe what was happening. I was backed in to a corner and there was nothing I could do. I called Matt back and told him that I would go to the bank and get a certified check, which I did, and to tell the movers to come back and he agreed. Shortly after this conversation, the police arrived at my door and asked what was going on. When I told them what happened, they were shocked that this company had actually called them instead of the other way around and went out to look for the truck. After this, it was more than 2 hours later that the moving van returned and the guys were extremely irritated and angry. Instead of looking to me to direct them where in the house to put my things, they just started throwing things in to the nearest room. A woman from the company pulled up and said she was there to collect payment. I gave her the check and asked for a receipt which she said she didn’t have. She told me to e-mail the manager for one. At this point, the only thing I could keep reminding myself of was that this was the last time I would ever have to deal with these people. When I e-mailed Matt, the manager, for a receipt, all he sent me was a copy of the same old invoice from the first move with a few sentences saying that I would be charged the same thing. No true receipt. I e-mailed back twice and have called several times to ask for an itemized receipt and get no response. This is the most crooked company I have ever worked with and I cannot believe they are still in business if this is there standard method of operating. The company runs a scam. If you use them, you will be very sorry you did.

Official company response

Scam Alert: Please note that this is an hourly service. Contract signed over two years ago prior to commencement of move stipulates payment terms. Service is hourly. In the even that another mover comes to pick up goods.. our employees must load their truck. We maintain a safe and secure environment for our customers and we cannot have third parties having free roam of our warehouse and having access to our other customers goods. We are not the only moving company with this policy. It is our responsibility to maintain an employee only warehouse as part of our insurance policy.

This customer was quoted $2,230 two weeks prior to delivery and she failed to render payment for delivery. She began trying to haggle the price offering $1,700 as a personal check. We do not take personal checks. We cannot verify that the money is there.

We had to get the Scituate Police involved when she failed to render payment as agreed two weeks in advance.

Due to the issue of non-payment we saw nearly $500-600 in additional labor charges we had to eat.

Long-distance move from Massachusetts to Florida

Small move MA to FL.

I had high expectations but was highly disappointed.
Let's start with honesty. They said they transport end-to-end with their own trucks;they do not. My move was transported by an independent trucker, and the trailer came from a third party. To unload, they used a local labor force, not their own employees, and there was some damage to walls and woodwork.
Perhaps the most troubling aspect was the accountability. One crew loaded me in Massachusetts, then it was loaded into another truck at their facility, and then unloaded in Florida by yet another group.
There were several items that "went missing", along with one furniture piece that was damaged. At no point was there an inventory of my household goods as they were picked up, so I have no idea of the extent of missing goods. They did not label the goods at my home, so for all I know they picked it over in their warehouse, then inventoried.
There were some obvious shortages and damage, so I communicated with them on several occasions. They seem to have made no effort to find the lost items, and have yet to compensate me for the small claim I put in.
In summary:
The good - Arrived and delivered on time.
The bad - Misrepresented the process (own trucks and personnel).
No inventory to track lost items.
Lost and/or damaged goods.
No communication during or after the pickup.
No claim settlement, though it was promised to be "in the mail" over a month ago.
Given what I know now, I would certainly have chosen another company.

Official company response

Thank you for using our services, Dennis. I apologize for any issues that may have come up and trust me, I am listening.

We employ class A drivers and we have a fleet of our own tractor trailers. We also have working relationships with local trucking companies.

We prioritize our own employees and trucks, but sometimes demand and efficiency demands that we utilize the help of local trucking companies. This does not effect the quality of the move. This allows us to be prompt in our out of state deliveries.

Our employees always load and unload in the state of Massachusetts. Going out of state, we face the same logistical issues that all movers face. We must hire local help, there is no way around it unless the customer wishes to pay a premium. There is always a representative of our company at the unload, whether it be the driver or the owner himself.

I trust that any damage claims have been resolved? All claims should be sent to claims@caseymovers.com to ensure a prompt response.

Horrible in every way!

My husband and I were quoted one price and then the day of our move we were hit with an adjustment of an additional $900! Without any notice. This was only to move our split level home across town!! The company said they "tried" to reach us the day before but with two working cell phone numbers we nver received a call. Two of the actual men who did the moving were very nice and professional, but the other two weren't. I watched in horror as one of them crashed items into my new walls several times. my woodwork was damaged at my previous and new homes. Several of my furniture pieces had major scratches in them. I had clearly labeled all of my items to be moved with where they were to go (basement, attic, bedroom, etc.) Most of my items were not where they were supposed to be! Things that were labeled basement ended up in the attic and vice versa. This is not easy when I am 4 months pregnant and cannot be lifting things. None of my large furniture items were covered with moving blankets when they were being moved in. This is what might have contributed to the several scratches. My husband has been dealing with their customer service which he says is horrible. Also, when my husband gave the company his credit card number for the additional charge they charged him twice..once on his debit card without his permission!!
DO NOT use this company!!

Service cost: $2000

Official company response

Our estimates are accurate unless the operation changes significantly. Adding an additional mover is a significant change. Your husband was informed that this would increase the cost of the move.

Your husband has a credit card on file with our company. This credit card was charged as required at the time of unloading your goods at your new home. Your husband called a couple of days later to pay his remaining balance--I took that call personally and charged his card again. There was mis-communication and refunded his double payment immediately.

Left us out to dry.

Moved in Metro West area to a house 5 miles away from current residence at the time.

Left our family out to dry. Summary: Did not show up for the move, didn't call, didn't care, also moved the sellers of the house we purchased on the same day we were set to move (5 miles from our house we moved out of).

We were set to move on October 30th at 8am. I called the day before to confirm. On October 29th we had a freak snow storm. 8:00am arrived and no Casey Movers. I figured they were late due to the storm the night before. At 10:00am I decided they were not going to show up and had to rent 4 Uhaul trucks from 3 different Uhaul locations. Good thing my wife has 3 brothers. It took us 11 hours to move.

Casey Movers called me at 7:15pm the day they were supposed to move us. Daniel left the following message: "Sorry I did not call you earlier..the police would not let our truck through as the road was blocked off.." Somehow I managed to travel to surrounding towns to rent Uhauls, but they could not get to my house. We live on a main road with multiple access to the highways. To top it off, on the same day, Casey Movers moved the people out of the house we were moving into (5 miles down the road from our home). Not only did they manage to move the sellers of the house we purchased, but they tore up the lawn in the process and had to have a tow truck pull them out of the yard. In the end we saved money about $800.

What's bothersome is they acted like it was no big deal. And they did not pay to have the lawn fixed or return my calls in regards to the lawn.

Steve Casey - I'm calling you on it!

Service cost: $1800

Official company response

If we take your deposit we will be there for your move. Proper communication is of the essence, providing a phone number and email address is necessary. And, if your home phone number is to be disconnected before your moving day, a cell phone number will be required.

Casey Movers review.

In all my years in the trucking, and moving industry I have never dealt with a more unprofessional, unorganized, and mismanaged company, they are the embodiment of the phrase, "the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing" I'll tell you, they had us fooled, they sent out a salesman to our condo, he looked at what we had and gave us a reasonable quote, so far so good, we were impressed, we set a date, and were assured that they were going to handle everything..more like mishandle everything. The day of the move, actually the night before the move, we were informed that they were going to "spot" a trailer at our condo so that when the crew got there the trailer would already be on site. I gave my salesman VERY explicit directions on where to park the trailer since we were out running last minute errands. When we got home we found that they had left the trailer in the wrong spot, right on a curve, creating a dangerous blind spot for drivers entering the complex. We got several disapproving calls from the association and other residents. The load day for the most part was uneventful, it wasn't until they had finished loading that I noticed that the trailer that all my worldly belongings had just been loaded into was NOT a moving van, but what's known in the industry as a "freight box", meaning that the trailer was designed to carry general freight, skids, crates, pallets, etc, NOT delicate household goods, the trailer had no system for securing the load, which allows things to settle and move during transit, which leads to damages and claims. The day of delivery the trailer shows up, but no labor, the driver told us in no uncertain terms that he does not unload, so we waited, FOR 5 HOURS for labor to show up. Who scheduled this? Claims, since claims are paid on what the item weighs, and NOT it's actual value the damaged items (my antique mans chest of drawers, my mom's antique hope chest, a microwave cart, a glass patio table, and a computer desk) were given an estimated weight and we were told that we would get a check for that amount..as of this printing, it hasn't arrived. Would I use Casey Movers again? Not even if they were the last moving company on the planet.

Horrible Experience.

Casey Movers of Rockland MA should not be used to move anything that is of any value to anyone. Their unprofessionalism started with what turned out to be a totally unrealistic proposal, continued with their untrained bull gang, continued with their sloppy packing and ended with a nightmare of broken belongings. Damaged furniture due to not being disassembled and wrapped, broken ceramics, dishware and glassware, damaged walls and and a carefree attitude toward our belongings. They took so long I ended up paying a penalty to the movers of the people who bought the house we were moving out of. One outrageous example, they threw a flat panel computer monitor into a wardrobe box and piled other unwrapped stuff on top of it. Ceramic ware stacked together without wrapping and crushed under the weight of other stuff packed on top. The dream of moving into a modern home crushed by box after box of broken stuff turned into a still recurring nightmare. Unmarked boxes turned unpacking into an never ending tedious grind. Insult to injury was a constyant failure to return phone calls. One other thing, moving in and out on rainy days they did not put down anything to protect the floors and carpets. If you value your belongings and sanity DO NOT USE Casey.

Service cost: $6200

Official company response

If we are to pack a home, we come out the day before at an hourly rate with a full van of supplies which includes, book boxes, medium boxes, large and extra large boxes with packing paper and tape.

If a pack is unanticipated we will not have the required supplies and the cost of your operation will increase.

You should obtain three estimates for every move. You should be looking for important details such as the number of movers required for an operation, the size of the truck required, and an approximate time frame for the completion of work. This is a sure-fire way to get an accurate picture of a moving operation before the move occurs.
